Reclaiming a Basement
This tiny house was built on a low foundation. Later, in an effort to concoct a basement, the crawl space was dug out creating a 2’ X 3’ platform around the entire perimeter with, worse yet, a 7’ foot ceiling height. There was a redeeming feature, though, that made this project worthwhile. Whoever dug out the basement also built, at the same time, but never finished, a 18′ X 20′ addition with an 8′ ceiling height and a walkout to a pretty backyard. Our challenge was to create easy access from upstairs to a livable space that added value to the house.
We were able to accommodate a bedroom, an office, a bath, and a lovely family room with access from a space saving and dramatic spiral stair. At first this project looked a bit hopeless, even to us. Now we are so glad we did it. The back story on what was required to build out this space is here: https://www.instagram.com/goto_gaddis_architect/.
